The Concentration in African Studies is designed for undergraduates and special students. The Concentration may not be taken by candidates for a graduate degree at the UW-Madison.
Students who complete the Concentration will receive a certificate from the African Studies Program indicating the area and amount of training completed.
To qualify for the Concentration, students must:
- Complete successfully at least 15 credits from the The African Studies Program at the UW offers undergraduates a Certificate in African Studies.
It consists of 15 credits of "core" courses (see course list on our courses webpage: http://africa.wisc.edu/proginfo/courses.htm) from at least two different departments. Core courses refer to courses that contain at least 66% African content. Only two courses from any one department may count toward the Certificate. If you wish to count an "extended core course", please see the assistant director in 204 Ingraham Hall for more information and to process an exception.
- Obtain the approval of the Director of the African Studies Program for the program of courses, and submit to the African Studies Office:
(a) the completed application
form (pdf format), and (b) transcripts verifying those courses and grades.
