Online Courses and Course Materials

  • Africana Resources for Undergraduates / Schmidt

  • H-AfrTeach, another of the H-Net lists. There has been little active discussion on the list to date but the site is structured to provide suggestions and model lesson plans, unit outlines, course syllabi, resource lists and bibliographies.

  • Music Cultures of the World. Music 401 is a course designed to survey several music cultures in Africa, Middle East, Iran, and India. We will discuss characterisitics of individual societies, types and functions of music, characteristics of the musical genres, and musical instruments. Recordings, films and videos will focus on individual music traditions.

  • Prisme. A bilingual descriptive database of 850 education projects in Africa, accessible online.

  • South African Politics: an introduction using internet resources

  • Syllabi for "Culture and Literature of Africa" a course taught at Central Oregon Community College. The site is quite heavy on typographic bells and whistles and can be somewhat overwhelming.

  • TeachAfrica "is dedicated to the teaching of Africa and the African Diaspora across the disciplines. It is a moderated, community-maintained digital repository of electronic resources related to African Studies available free-of-charge to registered users" (from the website).
